The author of the twokinds review haas only skimmed the surface in a shallow, biased attempt to review a great webcomic. It should not even be on this website. Discuss
First, I thought you should know that despite the name, some webcomics listed on this site get good reviews, including a couple I did. I wrote bad reviews for D. C. Simpson's webcomics I Drew This and Raine Dog because I (and others) felt those comics deserved them. However, I did write up a glowingly positive review of her classic webcomic Ozy and Millie not only because it deserved it, but to make the case I was reviewing her comics on their merits and praising or condemning them accordingly.
As for Twokinds, I was intrigued by it but it failed to "catch" me, and I feel its main purpose is to show as many pictures of Flora's feet and paw pads as possible.
Hello, and welcome here. This issue has been brought up several times over and over again, not only here, but anywhere they review this comic.
Regarding the art quality, I've to say it's very simplistic. Although coloring is nice at times, what it's anatomy, proportions and even perspectives at times falls flat. I've seen the female anatomy there and it's certainly the work of a person who has never studied anatomy. For an example, the hips literally are non-existent. They're just an widening of the waist. There's also several instances where the author does not want to portray genitalia. The problem is that he still depicts his characters in several "erotic" poses and situations. There's a shiton of tricks to keep genitalia covered meanwhile showing off some skin. The problem is that this guy tries not to learn any of it.
Foreshortening, for example, are of these things this guy seems to try to improve. However, it's also easily for him to distract from it and just draw whatever he feels like. Is this bad? It may make him happy, and the fappers as well. The problem is that it's a mediocre work that literally leaps at your face. He's been doing it for several years now, you would expect better from him. But no. He doesn't tries.
About the animu style, I've to say that it's just a polished version of what a person does just by looking at animes and mangas. Very superficial. Bodies are losely shaped, they're just a siluet with an animal fur skin on it. Indeed, he seems capable of toning the rib cage just for the sake of differentiate the chest from the belly. Anything else is just a barely shaped cilinder.
Sorry, but just making constructive and detailed criticism just from the art alone I can writte a whole book. I mean, it's been like 5-6 years since he started, and he still draws like a teenager anime fan.
Hhaha, I'm not sure what there is to discuss here.
Absolutely valid observations on this comic's art and writing are all part of the review process. An opinion is an opinion, so there is your supposed bias. Even the person writing the article made the point of saying so when discussing Fischbach's personality (or lack thereof).
If you had a problem with the wording perhaps, that's one thing. But proposing that this comic shouldn't have a review here?
On the off-hand you are not posting just for the sake of getting a response, I'd also like to add that I laughed heartily at "A GREAT WEBCOMIC". Sorry, gotta' stick to my guns. This comic is not only mediocre in art, but highly derivative and weak on character development AND world-building. Heaven help me if I even bother bringing up the ridiculously unoriginal and annoying inclusion of a sexy anime catgirl.
Actually, I think the discussion should be "What is good about TwoKinds" rather than if it deserves an article or not. Tell me, what is so good about this comic that it shouldn't deserve a negative review?
I'll just play devil's advocate, and try to think of some good things (or, rahter, some good theoretical things). I've read a few fantasy stories in my day, as well as played some fantasy games that feature anthropomorphic character races (elder scrolls is a good example), and in Morrowind, they even feature Khajiit (cat people) slaves, and Argonian (lizard people) slaves, and they represent an interesting, and rather politically deep, issues. Now, I know what you're going to say, Tom Ficshbach doesn't have the writing prose to even get close to the level of writing Morrowind had, but I'm just saying that, hypothetically, if Tom had the writing chops, he could really get an interesting idea.
Buddy, with all respect to you, I've to ask for facts. Hypothetically speaking, we can tell the truth that a WC sucks just by saying it sucks, rather than actually doing research and disscuss what's wrong about it.
Tom Ficshbach has a MFG huge load upon him: 9 years of making this WC continously. At college, we're taugh that the tittle of a Master can be obtained after 10 years of continous study and research on any field. This guy hasn't done any of it. It's been almost 10 and he still draws like a highschool anime fan. And if I cared enough for writting, I could also point out several writting flaws that are present up to this date.
And I've to be frank, I wouldn't like this to turn into another "angry zealot fan" circus. We don't build up review from speculations and preferences alone. We DO research whatever comic that we know about. In exchange, anyone is free and allowed to come here and disscuss wether or not that review is accurate. But the only thing we ask for are facts. Not points of view, not preferences, not emotional bonds of any type. Just factual proof that whatever point you claim that is right with X comic is valid.
We have no time for hypothesis about alternate realities where any mediocre author is a fullyu capable being.
You have a point there. And for the record, I think TwoKinds does a big waste of a potentially good world, which royally pisses me off. Though I think the "it could be good if Tom was a better writer" actually makes me like it less, not more.
Unfortunately, concept holds very little weight when the execution is done poorly. If I wanted to expound on the depths of inter-cultural relations and reflect some prior emotional distress regarding this via fantasy (as in write something which is apparently meaningful to me), while at the same time wishing to be taken seriously by others, I would not have chosen the method of erotic furry manga. Hell, who as a serious artist would?
That said, if he decided to ever do a rewrite and kick the habit of pandering to the fetishist crowd I'd be interested to see if he's matured at least. It may be too far along for that, though.
I am not one to beat around the bush, not on a site like this in any case. If we didn't think this comic was bad it would not have a review here. And I have no intention of toning down my openion of it just because I have to confront an actuall person with it instead of writing it in the safe and criticism free space of a closed off review. So let me just say this:
This comic is shit.
it's a boring, poorly draw pile of nonsense that does a poor job in hiding the fact it's creator is a pervert who only draws it to sooth his own conscience about being a sexual deviant by pretending it's art.
Rarely do you see someone with so many perversions. This comic contains hints of furry, gender bender, homosexual porn,a public nudity fetish, slight S&M and more!
Take your pathetic fanboy ass and get the fuck out of here.
I'm sure you have a busy day ahead of you masturbating to pictures of dog in bathing suits.
Ask me about webcomics.
Its 2013 and the comic didnt got better for shit! Agreed with oddguy the comic is just filled with fetishes, like the swap-gender shit, and not to mention it still has the horrible anatomy,i hope someday that comic will cease to be actualized and the money grubber bastard of fishbach will just quit it already, but that dream seems like imposible to be acomplished. :(
Have to agree, but on my own terms: the guy is a mediocre artist, and has avoided improvement for a unbearable amount of time. He, however, gives speeches on how to be an artist, or what is art, even though he's never had actual artistical preparation and his milestone seems tom have stagnated for years now. On the design department, his comic doesn't really try to step apart from the herd of generic, anime-inspired drawings people with an unhealthy obsession with japanese cartoons does. As a communicator (let's remember he claims this comic is about "racism") his comic certainly FAILS to visually portray such themes. For a person whom denies to do fetish-related content, he INSISTS in drawing all kings of compromising poses and nudes of his characters over and over again. To add insult to injury, he tries to sell us the idea he ins't a pornographer just by "self-censoring" his drawings by not drawing genitalia, or even avoiding to draw a butt in a bleeding picture with it saluting the viewer.
Honestly, I kinda like this comic. It's certainly not the worst furry comic I have ever read. It doesn't make me angry like Jay Naylor's work and I don't feel like it's a chore to read. The art, at times, can look decent by webcomic standards, and I do end up liking certain characters. However, at the same time, it shows several problems associated with furry comics and webcomics in general. Specifically, all the nudity and fan service. Now, I'm no prude and even I play the fanservice card on occasion (my own Anthropomorphic comic has a nudist character in it) but it's obvious that like most furry comics, it has this bizarre fascination with constant nudity, and Tom's rather poor attempts to censor it and make it seem less perverted just make it worse. On that topic, maybe it's just me, but the fact that the fox and cat Keidran lack any sort of muzzle really bothers me. Some artists, like Fred Perry, can pull it off, but Tom just doesn't. Also, while I said I like some of the characters, that mostly means the side characters, as Flora and Trace have about as much personality and depth as Squall and Rinoa from FF8. Finally, the racism undertones that are supposedly in this comic are really poorly executed. I'd say they are as flimsy and poorly conceived as X-Men's racism, but even the X-Men comics manage to put more effort into the Racial tensions between humans and mutants. So basically, while I do like this comic as a whole, I still feel that Two Kinds still deserves a review on this site.
I can agree with several posts about the comic before 2014, I believe that it, at least in the artistic department, has risen a good amount, not trying to pull some post necromancy, but I think that Twokinds is finally improving, if at least just a little. Although not really pushing the racial boundries much, there is not some type of plot going on in the back and foreground. Still sketchy, but the comic can yet try to gain glory.
It should be noted that TwoKinds even got reviewed on the Encyclopedia Dramatica website. Not that it's absolute proof that it's terrible; none other than furry artist Jim Hardiman compared it to The National Enquirer-and I agree. For the record, Encyclopedia Dramatica made a total put-down of D. C. Simpson and everything she's done, but did so in such a mean-spirited manner that it actually could make her enemies sympathize with her. I certainly thought Ozy and Millie was a good comic, though her subsequent works Raine Dog and I Drew This were shit-and I don't mean "the shit", just shit. She does have an actual newspaper comic out now called Heavenly Nostrils. It's certainly good compared to many newspaper comics out there, though that is faint praise indeed.
Going back to TwoKinds, it may not be a horrible comic, but I wouldn't call it good. Its art is fetishy and is meant to be, and I'm sure readers don't really care about the characters or its supposed message on racism so much as the tits and asses and crotches and feet and paw pads. I'm sure Tom Fischbach is well aware of this, because I've seen his DeviantART site, and he shows a lot of his characters (especially Flora) in various fetishy poses, mostly involving paws. I think he knows who his audience really is and what they want.
You can bet your ass that hes aware of that, that semi autistic asshole barely ever talk to his audience anymore,as if he ever did,but the more disgusting thing about him is that hes a money sucking cunt, just search for the prices of his so called TK books(if that can be called a book).
That tone of yours… are you a former TwoKinds forumgoer who's just been banned?
