I… I don't know what to say. It's just so full of terrible.
Reminds me of http://lowroad75.comicgenesis.com/ , but a lot more wonky looking.
As much as I appreciate full color and detailed backgrounds, the bones.. The very look and anatomy of everything needs work. I wouldn't even get into the whole.. vampire kid thing.
Speaking of Lowroad, that comic looks pretty creepy as hell.
I thought G. was looking to improve on his original. Looks like "Smashing Adventures of the Bottomleys" hit bottom, so he's looking to get a shovel and start digging deeper than the bottom.
Terrible. Terrible. Terrible.
This guy is jacking off his ego SO HARD. Annyseed was born on the same day as John Lennon and was turned on the day that Elvis released his first album. GUYS HEY GUYS I KNOW THE ROCK AND ROLL MUSIC SO I'M COOL RIGHT?
oh GOD the ENTIRE youtube channel is dedicated to that?
I want to be like "Look, dude, you don't even THINK about that kinda shit until you're, like, Disney level or some kinda real animator."
HIS COMIC IS BARELY TWENTY PAGES AND HALF OF IT IS DEDICATED TO A MONOLOGUE.
(How can I miss that? I was willing to pass this over as mediocre animu, but this? This is kinda crazy. You just don't do these kinda things unless you're way WAY far into the comic and have a huge fanbase NEVER. I don't give a fuck if it's the web 2.0 and you use youtube and twitter, it's a goddamn webcomic, you don't need more than a single paragraph for these things. When you describe your characters, you summarize it to what they do and who they are as short as possible. You leave the rest to the actual comic. YOU LEAVE SOMETHING TO THE IMAGINATION.)
God this kinda crap just.. steams me. It should be embarrassing.
I've been here for a while and I still haven't done a review. So if its alright with everyone I'd like to take a stab at this…or get halfway through reading this comic and spontaneously combust. Which ever comes first.
Hah at this point I think an actual review would be impossible. The comic has only just started. Nothing interesting but it would be wrong to make judgments when no plot has even come about yet.
The youtube channel I haven't checked out but I get the feeling its nothing good….
And Holy cow, yo! Is there really that much to get upset about @ Angry Lesbian?
So I went to the page. The guy has some character art and brief descriptions of the characters, his inspirations for them and what have you. I found it semi interesting to be honest. It's just a preview. He doesn't give away any story or plot sooooooo what the hell are you so riled up for? Its a freaking youtube page where he puts up little minute long videos of character art. How is this a crime? Even though the story has only just started how can you hate it already? If the story and characters are bland, boring, and cliche (none of which has been developed yet) then fine. Rant until the cows come home. But for now I think real judgment should be held off.
The one thing I did find annoying was Annyseed's plot hole excuse of why she is able to walk around in daylight.
Sorry, it's just.. hm.. how to explain it..
It's like hyping up a movie that doesn't even exist yet. By the producer himself. And he has no crew. And this producer drew everything in crayon and is playing every actor role. Badly, or at least mediocre. It's just.. weird. Maybe pathetic. Narcissistic even.
Doesn't it look gaudy when everything is dressed up like that? Like, it's a far cry from an empty keenspace template, but.. where's the modesty?
I just have a feeling it's gotta be epic. It's gotta be worth all that flashy crap and youtube page (lord the entire thing is dedicated to that.. I wouldn't be so pissed if it was just contained to one video, but.. god.)
… oh geez now I'm feeling sorry for the guy..
At least he puts effort into the coloring and background, but I ain't backing down from the wonky and awkward anatomy/faces! >:I
I still have a hard time understanding where your er… "seething anger"(?) is coming from. Its just a simple Youtube page with character art. At no point does he claim to be the best at what he does. But obviously he's proud enough to make a simple, out of the way, under the radar youtube page. And he talks about his inspiration. I mean sweet Jesus its not like the dude is making money off this or anything. Or asking for donations or anything else a person does when he/she believes their crappy webcomic is worthy of such. Its a friggin youtube page. It's like a livejournal with video in this case. What makes Youtube so amazing that some random guy can't put concept art on it.
Sure its anime style with questionable anatomy but I thought it was wrong to judge a book by its cover. He may even improve his art later on.
There is no reason to feel sorry for him until the story gets in gear and ends up being a pile of poo but until then I find your anger mostly unwarranted. It seems more like you're making vast assumptions of the fate of this web comic based in its art style alone. And like I said before that can improve.
Pidgeon, I'm pretty sure Angry Lesbian is just exaggerating her "seething anger." I mean, I often say I despise comics, when in reality I just don't think they're good enough to receive all the attention and adoration they've received.
I can sort of see where you're coming from, A.L. A full youtube page for a comic that's barely started is overkill. It's like one of those summer blockbusters where the movie stinks but they advertise so hard that the hype overpowers the stench of low quality.
On the other hand Pidgeon, I get your point too. This comic's barely started, and it's got a few good points that could be built on to make a decent comic.
I don't think Annyseed is long enough yet for us to make a good conclusion on its quality. Let's wait a few more pages before we go after it. I want to see what the artist can do.
I don't know if he can do much, but like Roger Ebert once said, you should watch something all the way through before you review it.
Well. Maybe no one here actually wrote him but the letter he got was just a bunch of tvtropes links. Because who ever wrote it was too incompetent or lazy to write their complaints themselves so they just decided "DUUUR I'll just link to TVtropes the absolute GOD of all things regarding media and storytelling duuuuur"
http://crystalfishltd.deviantart.com/ It's in the journal. It just bothered me that someone would be mean enough to write a letter of complaint without even trying to critique in a helpful way. Linking to TVTropes isn't help. You got the balls to e-mail someone and tell them their comic sucks. At least have the decency to explain why. Or try to tell them how to fix those problems. Otherwise don't even bother!
oooooh TVTropes heals aaaaaalllll…
While the letter was poorly written, I lost a lot of respect for the author. It was extremely childish of him to not only post the hate email, but to post his even more childish and snotty response back to the person. How old is this guy? He needs to grow up. At first, I thought he was better than that since he admitted that since his comic is out there it is subject to not only being loved, but being hated as well. But his response was just ridiculous, especially the ending line "Well done, you’ve successfully wasted my time. I’m sure Annyseed’s readers will have a good laugh at this letter. You wet your bed; I will hang the sheets on the washing line for all to see.", what the fuck? This guy is more immature than two 12 year old prepubescent girls fighting over who's going to marry the Jonas Brothers.
I don't consider his response all that bad since almost anyone would feel miffed about receiving such stupid hate mail. His response could have been a lot worse. But the fact that he mentions he has groupies that back him up is a bad sign. Groupies have this tendency to make humble people not so humble.
Agreed that anyone would feel miffed and it could have been worse, but every webcomic out there gets hate mail and yet how many well respected and well done comics do you see posting the hate mail and their childish response as well? To do it in the first place is just pathetic. The only thing he wanted was for his groupies to tell him: "OMGZ! UR COMIC DOESN'T SUX, ANNYSEED IS AMAZING YOU ARE THE BESTEST ARTIST EVURRRR!!!!" which just boosts his ego into overdrive and now that he has a bunch of cronies telling him that his comic is the best then he's going to get it into his head that it is, when it's not, and I guarantee that he will not improve as an artist as long as his cronies are there to reassure him that his bad comic is great. I know it's still starting out, but it's already has tell signs that it's not going to be a great comic and his childish response is saying to me that he thinks it's great and will continue to suck because he has stooges who are will to jack off his ego. This guy looks to be in his late 20's and he can't handle 1 little hate mail letter, especially when it's just the first one of many probably to come? He needs to toughen up and grow up.
Even through the mail sounds like written by an elementary grade schoolboy in under five minutes I agree that Stuart Brown's journal reply makes him appear to be a big manchild starving for attention.
(which is quite popular these days, the kids are quite hip with that sort of stuff and I thought it would suit the style of a webcomic nicely.)
Hoho, these youngsters nowadays consider my caboodle as hip and maybe as groovy.
You wet your bed; I will hang the sheets on the washing line for all to see.
YOU IZ A FUCK; YOU HAS ANGERED ME >:[
Lol, I got quite a laugh out of the "the kids are quite hip with that sort of stuff" line. This guy is trying way too hard to act like a teenager when he's clearly past that stage physically, though his maturity is still at the level of a child.
I wrote a DA note to him as soon as I read his response to the hate mail: Yeah it is rotten that someone would send you such an email. It was shallow unintelligent and not very helpful. But I think you have to keep in mind that it's not good to let it get to you. And the worst- THE WORST thing you can ever do is insult the person back. It only makes you look insecure or immature. I have nothing against you defending yourself but saying bad things about the person who sent the letter will only give them and others who don't like your web comic what they want.
If anything you should put it out there that you accept criticism that is constructive and ignore the stupid flamer/trolls. And don't rely souly on your fans for confidence. Ton's of people fall into that trap of "Well I have a lot of fans so there is absolutely nothing wrong with my web comic so U SUCK!" This, my friend, is how epic jerks are created. I'm sure it's difficult to do but you don't want to give flamers an inch of control!
Thankyou for reading!
How many more comics does he have to put out again before we write the article? This guy is the epitome of unwarranted self-importance.
Frankly, there are people (including many who we've reviewed) who would kill to get even that half-assed kind of criticism. While I agree it was terribly written and not terribly convincing, the author makes a lot of relevant points, including fourth wall, storyline issues, lack of research, etc.
And this comic, unlike far better comics like Gunnerkrigg Court or even Dr. McNinja, already has a youtube channel devoted to it, only sixteen pages in?
I dunno. I'm beginning to feel a bit of Elanor Cooper in the holier-than-thou attitude this guy seems to convey.
P. Fucking. S. Brown, you just keep on unironically breaking the fourth wall and making wall-of-text intros and see how far it gets you.
Go back to your narrative structure class and keep reading your well structured tat.
Good advice from Mr. Brown. You heard him, webcomics fans, go back to your literature class books and your professional graphic novels written by people who actually know what the fuck they're doing, because Mr. Brown is incapable of writing a well-structured narrative himself.
well, I was going to give him 50 more comics given the molasses pacing (or at least till the plot actually gets somewhere god damn). "To be fair" and trying not to judge the artist himself.
It's like planting seeds. Are we going to get sunflowers?…
I see tendrils, but no flowers yet. It's beginning to stink like a weed tho..
(I swear Solomon would rip this guy a new one without even hesitating. This comic contains all the fallacies I hate, but I'm not sure if it's just me and I should wait. It's kinda pathetic going after something so small, even if it does have all the annoying "MY COMEEK IS DA GREATESTEST"-isms. Again, it's like previews for a movie you just know it's going to suck.)
I kinda feel the same way, that we should give it more time, but screw it, I'm sick of this guy's snotty attitude and overinflated ego and let's be honest, do we even see anything promising about his comic? I'd have to say no especially since he has the classic: "I have cronies who say I'm great so I am!" which tends to indicate things will only get worse, so if someone could help me out and let me know how to write an article, then I'd love to tackle this one. And like Angry Lesbian said, his pace is molasses so we'll be waiting for 10 years before we get enough comics to read "to be fair".
Well, you could start one and see where it takes ya. Maybe if it's got enough pictures we could get away with it.
You make a new page from the panel on the left. This'll make a page that has the same name as what you put in it. Then you can 'edit' it from the menu on the bottom. You can use the templates from the other reviews (or I think there's one on the forum). It's all text, so you can copy and paste it.
Formatting is done when you surround text with multiple underlines or dashes or brackets like this. But I just use the buttons.
Don't worry about not finishing it all at once, your review isn't even seen unless it's linked to the main page. Anyone (as a member) can edit it too. Keep backups anyways (paste it into a text file on your PC).
I admit this guy has a huge ego. But I also think it's quite funny that you guys are talking about it, more so than his comic. After all, it seems that this horrible forum has been designed to boost your own egos by putting people who try down. To say the truth I think Stuart’s webcomic is getting better and better.
Despite his obvious week points in anatomy and quirky art, I think that he's done a good job of doing something that, at first, might seem like an obvious attempt to win a teenage audience over, has become something quite unique and interesting. He's quite cunning too, gathering up what seems like a very loyal following in a small amount of time, without the backing of a publisher or advertising company. He's got us talking about him too. Good or bad, you're spreading links to his work all over the place.
I thought he was a bit of an ahole at first, for saying, "Go back to your well structured tat." but then again, Lord of the Rings isn't well structured and it's a classic, but a Hollywood script like, Water world, is well structured, but not half as good. I think it's awful how this forum is designed to pull things apart, or, “rip them new ones,” as someone in here said, especially when something is so fresh. Haven't you got anything better to do with your time? Wouldn't it make you feel a bit more positive and cheery if you were to writing a best webcomics list?
this horrible forum has been designed to boost your own egos by putting people who try down.
it's awful how this forum is designed to pull things apart, or, “rip them new ones,”
"Wah wah waaah, how dare you guys analyse people's comics and point out faults! HOW DARE YOU NOT KISS THE ASS OF EVERYONE WHO CAN DRAW ;m; PEOPLE DON'T PUT THEIR ART ON THE INTERNET BECAUSE THEY WANT YOUR OPINION ABOUT IT!! Except if your opinion is nice, then you should gently stroke them and whisper your opinion repeatedly into their ear. Purring."
Did you seriously just come here to cry
I can see I've pressed the right buttons. There's no need to get angry, but you seem to be twisting my words a little. I would think that webcomic artist put their work on the internet mainly to entertain those that want to be entertained. Some of this criticism is good, but I can’t help but feel that a lot of it is spawned from jealousy.
Why not ignore the crap webcomics and simply strive to find the best ones, like a good healthy human being, instead of digging through a garbage can? I just find having a BAD webcomics wiki a little bit redundant.
I've been thinking also; doesn't Star Wars open with a wall of text intro that explains a shit load of stuff before you even get to the first shot?
Do you seriously just come here to bitch?
I can see you're the type of person that likes taking stuff apart and putting it back together again, a bit like Sid from Toy Story. Maybe you wouldn't be so angry if you tried making something of your own? Your defense is throwing my words back at me? That’s quite lame, after all, I wrote them and I know very well what I said.
I apologize for throwing the Star Wars reference at you. Someone else mentioned a wall of text earlier in this forum, stating that it was a bad thing. Well it seemed to work for George Lucas.
1. I do make my own comics. I love comics as an artistic medium, which is mostly why it pisses me off to see how much the internet has cheapened them into fetishpandering weaboo melodramatic attention-whoring shit.
Kinda like if someone loved music and put a lot of love and practice into their music, then logged onto the internet and saw a load of people just bashing symbols together and screaming I AM A MUSICIAN, PRAISE ME FOR MY BRILLIANCE
2. A wall of text in a comic is bad. Comics are a visual medium and you should be telling the story with images. Star wars wasn't a comic, and the words at the start of star wars weren't static anyway. It doesn't really work to say "a movie did one thing so a comic should be able to do it", they're entirely different mediums.
If I hear music I don't like, I simply turn it off. I wouldn't waste time making a forum, so I could moan about how I disliked it.
Have you ever read a Star Wars comic? They all start with the wall of text.
Good luck with your comics. :) There is nothing wrong with publishing them on the internet.
Goddamn it I have comics on the internet you ginormous thicko are you not getting what I am saying here. I LIKE COMICS. I AM PASSIONATE ABOUT THEM. SOMETIMES IF I THINK THEY ARE GOOD ENOUGH I WILL SHOW THEM TO OTHER PEOPLE. AND IF PEOPLE TELL ME WHAT IS WRONG WITH THEM, I MANAGE TO NOT THROW A SHITFIT. BECAUSE IF YOU'RE PREPARED TO PUT YOUR SHIT ON THE INTERNET, YOU SHOULD BE PREPARED FOR PEOPLE'S OPINIONS ABOUT IT.
When you're passionate about an artistic medium you don't just "turn the other cheek" when people are bad at it. You offer them criticism. And when they refuse that criticism, you remind them that if they're not prepared to take criticism they shouldn't be putting their work out at all.
But hey I'm sure you're really happy in your little deviantart land of everyone suckling gently on each other's arsecheeks and whispering sweet flattery all day long. Have fun watching your favourite artists' work stagnate when they stop experimenting and start just doing whatever makes the fans happy, derp derp derp.
I thought he was a bit of an ahole at first, for saying, "Go back to your well structured tat." but then again, Lord of the Rings isn't well structured and it's a classic, but a Hollywood script like, Water world, is well structured, but not half as good.
Saying "Go back to your well structured tat" is exactly what you should do. IOW, go back to reading something by somebody who actually knows how to write.
Also: Structure isn't everything. Not even architects concentrate only on what's structurally sound. But LOTR is great because it was able to overcome its… whatever structural problems it had, whereas Water World had a lot more problems than just horrible structure.
Wouldn't it make you feel a bit more positive and cheery if you were to writing a best webcomics list?
Sure. I'd love to write reviews of Achewood, Lackadaisy Cats, Penny Arcade, Gunnerkrigg Court, The Suburban Jungle, Good Cheese, and Kid Radd.
In fact, we have just such a list. It's called "The Not Bad Comics" and it's a part of our forums, free to be read by anybody as far as I can tell.
I just find having a BAD webcomics wiki a little bit redundant.
You are a fantastic troll. Seriously, you almost had me thinking you didn't like our stuff, but yes, calling a webcomic "bad" is indeed redundant, because all webcomics are terrible.
"Not bad comics." sounds lovely. All webcomics are Terrible? I think that's a little unfair, personally.
What makes me a Troll? Or are you throwing offensive words in to try and get a rise out of me?
"Not bad comics." sounds lovely.
It does, because it keeps with the humor of the site. You see, it's a funny way of saying "we like it" since it'd make everybody think we can only base ourselves in hate. Actually, it's because we mostly deal with bad stuff here, so its a funny way of keeping as close to the subject as possible.
You really do need an explanation for everything we do and say, don't you?
All webcomics are Terrible? I think that's a little unfair, personally.
And you believed him. Really?
Once again, it's hard to stay in the pulse of our chatter, but here's a clue: you don't have to take everything we say so damn seriously (specially the outlandish claims, which are most possibly jokes).
Lui can we have a rule that anyone who comes to whinge about how everyone here is MEAN JEALUS TROLLS and makes no interesting points gets banned
It is annoying as fuck
Also I genuinely don't get where the "jealousy" is coming in, though people seem to keep saying it. What is it I'm meant to be envying here? Artistic talent? Being brave enough to showcase your work on the internet? It's weird how people assume I write this stuff having never drawn comics of my own. I know that at least two people here besides me draw / have drawn comics, and I dunno when "showing off on the internet" became a test of bravery.
Or maybe I'm meant to be envying their ~*INTERNET FAME*~
Jealousy, my dear Lesbot, is one of the many stock callbacks of this fascinating fenomenon I like to call "counter-hate" or "defensive hate" (aka everything-goes-patriotism).
It is based on the folk belief that when somebody hates something, they must actually love it deeply in the inside and actually feel jealousy because of its apparent fame or skill. 78.1% of all unlikely shipping fanfiction is based on this.
Since we are reviewing stuff we patently don't like because of LACK OF skill and DISAGREEMENT over their style and opinions, this statement is ludicrous. Most of us wouldn't want to run a webcomic we consider bad, hard as it is to understand.
But it's not like they think stuff through when they counter-hate. In fact, they hate analysing and disecting stuff to make a counter-argument. That why we always get this stock answers. Just take it easy, Les.
Trolls, oh right, it's what some people call you guys? I think that's a bit unfair too.
(This is not directly pointed at you, Supercat. I'm just elaborating on the subject, since people seem to need a writen explanation on everything we are and do.)
Yeah, it is quite unfair. Trolls, as normally understood, implies people that barge into forums or sites they know nothing about or don't condone, start spamming, bashing or ruining discussions, and leave without any meaningful contributions and without even listening to other arguments or opinions.
We take the lesson from John Solomon and other "haters" by doing all of our discussions in this forum, apart from any fanbase or context, where we can calmly talk, both serious and not serious at the same time, while we plan or discuss the reviews and webcomics we visit. We are just a bunch of friendly guys talking in our own site about the things we don't like, both seriously and/or just for fun. We are not erecting ourselfs on top of anyone, but you're welcome to come in and read what we think about stuff.
In other words, we escape the "troll" basic definition because we don't go out of here and troll. We only work in here, were anyone is incredibly capable of not coming inside and not submit themselves to our opinions. We almost never and by no ways encourage going into other sites and forums and directly diss people about their comic, or promote stuff done here (special cases have arised in which some members either were called upon to enter said forums to set things straight, or were already a part of the fandom before writing the review).
PS: I'm not saying you are a troll, Supercat, but it certainly beats the purpose of being nice and positive that you come here and right-out call this a "horrible forum" and that we "boost [our] own egos by putting people who try down" and completely questioning the reason for having a review site and community forums. If there's some kind of scale or "troll percentage" out there, you're closer to full score than us.
